About Sofia Kwong
Kwong is a final year student at HKBU AVA, and her works are presented under the alias of @three.golds on Instagram. She deliberately curtails her own control as she paints, letting elements of natural phenomenon sway her process. Her marks are made at the intersection of matter and memory, where the body, the mind and the environment take equal footing in art making.
A guide or response to Kwong’s works
Crouching on all fours, there is only a layer of soil between the living and dead. Disaster has struck, and all that is left on this earth is all rock and no water. Crawling on a winding road, made of gravel and sand, the skull pounds as the spine bends. Unable to distinguish between tinnitus and thunder, there is no sign of water that could indicate a timing to rest. But the wasteland is not vacant. Organic or not—every matter amongst wind and sand becomes a sign, even the direction of wind alters the will. I no longer equate to the subject, that both the perceiver and the perceived are active in their engagement.
